Rate My Placement - Designed by students, for students

Mon 22 Sep 2008 |

Ratemyplacement.co.uk is a website that is essentially riding the wave of empowerment that the internet gives to consumers– but the notion that today’s individual doesn’t have to suffer undue poor service, or even employment, is expanded to the growing tradition of the student internship. According to one of the co-founders Oliver Sidwell: ‘We all did placements ourselves when we were at Loughborough University– 65% of students at the university do so.’

The team set up a website just for the Loughborough area in March 2007, whereby people who had just undergone a placement can rate how good it was on a scale of one to ten. They were pleased with the positive response, and decided there was enough of a market to go national.

‘It allows students who’ve done a placement to give reviews, so others have a more informed choice’, says Sidwell. ‘And employers do really appreciate the feedback.’ So impressed were some of the employers that they requested to have advertising spots next to their own profiles. The company decided on a nationwide re-launch, which took place last October, but not until after ratemyplacement.co.uk had won the Loughborough University Business Plan bursary of £1,500. This the founders supplemented with funding of their own from friends and family, with approximately £1,500 per head going to the young company’s coffers.

For the meantime, advertising is to be the primary source of revenue, while the team focuses on providing useful content to students.
